senior art Exhibition:
movement
This exhibition is the culmination of two years of IB Visual Arts. The theme of my work is movement and through this exhibition I want to bring viewers to acknowledge the many different ways that movement is present in our daily lives.

Graphite and while color pencil on toned paper 76x52cm This piece aims to capture the movement of the body during physical activity such as longboarding. It is based off of a photograph taken while longboarding, so a realistic sense of motion could be captured in the contracted muscles. A low viewpoint exaggerates the body and brings focus onto the shoes and legs. The toned paper creates stronger tonal contrast putting emphasis on the wrinkles, folds, and curves of each different surface.

Oil on MDF 110x150cm This painting is based off of photos taken while I was longboarding. It aims to portray realistic physical movement. I chose to apply a warmer color-scheme to the scene to create a feeling of summer. The large scale of the piece intends to invite viewers into the scene and experience freedom and joy.

Digital Photography 40x71cm This photograph series depicts trails of light created with long-exposure portraying the movement of our fast-paced surroundings through light. However, each still holds an element of stillness creating a dichotomy that points out just how fast our lives are going.

Clay and glaze 25x84x35cm This piece is acts as a linking piece allowing viewers to transition into a different way of perceiving movement. There is strong contrast created between the grounded, stark white human feet and the abstract ribbon forms revealing the vibrant color inside. This symbolizes the movement from strict uniformity to a culture of creativity that China is experiencing post-cultural revolution.

Digitally manipulated photography 45x56cm This series of work features traditional Chinese textiles being covered up under concrete bricks. This intends to portray how despite the opportunities created by China’s economic development and urbanization, it is at the expense of traditional Chinese culture.

Screen print on rice paper 46x66cm These prints depict a splash of water constructed of a plethora of pattern and color representing the re-emergence of rich Chinese culture that had been suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. The graphics are all printed onto rough, plain surfaces to make the delicate patterns and vibrant colors stand out.

Spray-paint on MDF 110x150cm This piece makes reference to the ‘little yellow bikes’ that anyone living in Beijing would immediately recognize. I focused this piece on the societal issue of public bike accumulation, congestion, and wastage. Because these ‘little yellow bikes’ were initially introduced as an means of ‘green’ transportation, many people do not acknowledge the effect these bikes had on the urban environment once they began piling up.

Woodcut print 67x60cm This piece depicts a building in Beijing famous for its futuristic architecture, 望京SOHO, unravelling itself and revealing the red pillars that hold it up inside. These red pillars symbolize traditional Chinese architecture that had been demolished to make space for modern apartment buildings and shopping malls as a result of rapid urbanization.

Installation; screen prints on take-out box and soda can The graphics are based on a piece of ice melting due to global warming caused by excessive CO2 emissions. The lines on the different pieces of ice are all taken from road-maps of the top 5 highest CO2 emitting countries. The many common items featured in this installation intend to help viewers recognize that their own actions do have an effect on the world around them.
